January 21, 2014 2013 Spec Script Sale #114: Amor, by William Jack Sibley

Welp, here it is. ICYMI, the last spec sale of 2013 was William Jack Sibley's "Amor," a romantic drama that will be produced by Gerald T Olson and Dan Nelson through Golden Leaf Pictures.

The 114th spec sale, made by Jeff Ross, caps off a year that found itself 18 shy of numbers reached in both 2011 and 2012. We'll reflect on this, and the other 113, later this month in our Year End Scorecard and Roundup.

      But onward.

      Upward.

Cheers to a New Year of mid to high sixes.

Warner Bros. didn't go on a shopping spree in 2013, but they did end the year right. The spec, which is being kept underwraps, also has Krasinski, Uziel and veteran writer Scott Z. Burns producing.

December 13, 2013 2013 Spec Script Sale #112: A Boy and His Tiger, by Dan Dollar

You'll have to excuse the radio silence from us on these two spec sales. Well, you don't have to, but we are sorry. Anyway, Warner Bros. picked up Dan Dollar's biopic drama "A Boy and His Tiger." It chronicles the early career of Calvin & Hobbes creator Bill Watterson. Dicaprio and his Appian Way banner will produce with Vertigo's Roy Lee and Romark's Rock Shaink.

With "Saving Mr. Banks" in award contention and the Mr. Rogers story "A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood" in development at Treehouse, this particular genre shows no signs of slowing down. Dollar's repped by CAA and Michael Botti of Industry Entertainment.

This is the 112th spec script sale of 2013 overall. Click the title above for more details.

      WME repped the sale.

This is the 110th spec script sale of 2013 overall. Click the title above for more details.

The team has been keeping busy as of late, with their first spec, "Dawn Patrol," just about in the can. They're repped by UTA and manager Scott Carr, who had a hand in developing the spec.

Yep. It's the 100th spec script sale of 2013 overall. Click the title above for more details.

October 31, 2013 2013 Spec Script Sale #99: Little Black Dress, by David Chase

David Chase's war veteran drama "Little Black Dress" has sold to Paramount. Fitting that it wears spec sale #99, as there's a consensus out there that David is "the great one" of television for his HBO masterpiece "The Sopranos."

UTA's Peter Benedek and Andrew Cannava brokered the deal. We'll fill you in on who's attached to produce once that info trickles in.

This is the 99th spec script sale of 2013 overall. Click the title above for more details.

October 31, 2013 2013 Spec Script Sale #98: Don't Hang Up, by Joe Johnson

Brooklyn Weaver, who repped the sale, will also produce with Altitude's Will Clarke.

This is the 98th spec script sale of 2013 overall. As always, feel free to click the title above for more details.

      October 31, 2013 2013 Spec Script Sale #97: Sister-in-law, by Sarah Heyward

Hello Giggles, the dominant production shingle spearheaded by Hollywood's girl next door Zooey Deschanel, has set up Sarah Heyward's (you guessed it) quirky romantic comedy "Sister-in-law" with Good Universe.

Deschanel, along with Rivka Rossi and Molly McAleer, continue to dominant the TV space, with multiple sales this season. But this is their first venture onto the big screen. Good Universe's Audrey Chon will oversee for Joe Drake and Nathan Kahane.

This is the 97th spec script sale of 2013 overall. Click the title above for more details.

October 31, 2013 2013 Spec Script Sale #96: Fetch, by Kristen Vincent & Tim Moran

Newly revamped Paramount Insurge got their sea legs pretty quick. They've acquired "Fetch," an offbeat comedy from neophyte scribes Kristen Vincent & Tim Moran. Veteran writers Josh Appelbaum, Andre Nemac, Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner will produce through their Space Floor banner.

WME and Mosaic repped the sale. Alison Small, who recently moved over from Paramount, will oversee the project.

October 28, 2013 2013 Spec Script Sale #95: Patient Z, by Mike Le

Well, it's official. After generating solid buzz around town, Mike Le's post-apocalyptic spec, "Patient Z," has sold to Screen Gems. Le's reps, David Saunders of APA and manager Jonathan Hung, had Patient Z into over a dozen buyers (including 4 of the 6 majors) garnering extremely positive feedback before accepting an offer 6 days after it went out.

We haven't confirmed which producers took Patient Z into the mini-studio. At one point, we speculate six or more producers were gunning to set the project up, which only makes the project that more appealing. Vincent Newman (Legendary's upcoming "Paradise Lost") is producing.

Congrats, Mike Le. And did we mention how much we love October?

This is the 95th spec script sale of 2013 overall. Feel free to click the title above for more details.

October 23, 2013 2013 Spec Script Sale #94: The Drop, by Jeremy Drysdale

The Solution will distribute the just-wrapped Black List/Hit List favorite Two Night Stand, as well as How to Make Love to an Englishman, which assembled quite the cast.

Jeremy is with manager Chris Tuffin of Sentient here in the US and Laura Rourke of Independent in the UK.

This is the 94th spec script sale of 2013 overall. You can click the title above for more details.

October 22, 2013 2013 Spec Script Sale #93: Attach, by Chris Gorak

The sci-fi genre continues to solidify its #3 position over comedy, as Chris Gorak's spec script "Attach" created a bidding frenzy this week, with Paramount eventually landing the project. They're letting Gorak keep the keys and direct.

It's the 16th sci-fi spec to sell this year, and it has "Chroncile" producer Adam Schroeder behind it, who will take Gorak's film in a similiar direction.

This is the 93rd spec script sale of 2013 overall. As always, you can click the title above for more details.

October 14, 2013 2013 Spec Script Sale #92: The Strategist, by Inon Shampanier

Make that four. Inon Shampanier's "The Strategist" has sold to Millennium Films. The thriller centers on a chess master CIA agent who must take down a dangerous dictator. Shampanier will be the man behind the camera as well. Mark Gill is producing with the rest of the company heads executive producing.

We think that about does it for today, but we won't hold our breath.

This is the 92nd spec script sale of 2013 overall. Feel free to click the title above for more details.

October 14, 2013 2013 Spec Script Sale #91: Reminiscence, by Lisa Joy

The third spec sale of the day goes to "Reminiscence" by Lisa Joy (USA's "Burn Notice," ABC's "Pushing Daisies"). Legendary Pictures has purchased her sci-fi thriller, appointing executive Alex Hedlund to oversee its development.

Joy is with UTA's Larry Salz.

This is shaping up to be the most action-packed Monday in quite some time.

It's the 91st spec script sale of 2013 overall. You can click the title above for more details.

October 14, 2013 2013 Spec Script Sale #90: Untitled Cantwell & Rogers / Kosinski Project, by Christopher Cantwell & Christopher Rogers

With its second big spec sale of the day, Verve has set up Christopher Cantwell and Christopher Rogers' untitled grounded action thriller with Media Rights Capital.

Wow. We're told it sold for high six figures. Blockbuster director Joseph Kosinski ("Tron: Legacy," "Oblivion") hatched the idea and onboarded Cantwell & Rogers ("The Knoll," AMC's "Halt & Catch Fire") to write on spec. It's no surprise he's attached to direct. And it's another solid victory for the scribes: the team has made the Blacklist twice, and are currently in production on their AMC series that recently got ordered.

This is the 90th spec script sale of 2013 overall. As always, click the title above for more details.

October 14, 2013 2013 Spec Script Sale #89: Section 6, by Aaron Berg

It's a picture perfect Monday for the spec market, writer Aaron Berg and his reps at Verve. His historical thriller spec, "Section 6," has sold to Universal for $1.2 million, and astronomical number that takes us back to booming spec market days of decades past.

"Section 6" ignited a bidding war that eventually sqaured Universal against Sony, who both offered progress-to-production clauses in their respective offers.

When a spec lights the town ablaze, we try to act like we've been there before (see: White House Down), but it's just hard not to get unprofessionally giddy.

Former studio exec Lawrence Grey was attached to produce early on, and Marc Platt and Adam Siegel have come aboard under their overall deal with Universal.

This is the 89th spec script sale of 2013 overall. Feel free to click the title above for more details.

October 10, 2013 2013 Spec Script Sale #88: White Rush, by John Schramm

The spec hungry monster has been fed again. Thunder Road's fifth spec script purchase of 2013, "White Rush," hails from neophyte scribe John Schramm. It's said to be a contained action thriller in the vein of Point Break (score). We must say, Basil Iwaynk's producing plate is getting pretty full.

Schramm's repped by Matt Martin at CAA and Brooklyn Weaver.

This is the 88th spec script sale of 2013 overall. Feel free to click the title above for more details.

October 3, 2013 2013 Spec Script Sale #87: The Unsacred, by Amanda Gusack

Screen Gems has purchased horror/thriller spec "The Unsacred" by Amanda Gusack for father/son team Alan and Peter Riche to produce. Scott Strauss will oversee for the studio.

It makes sense for studios to keep optioning low budget fright pics, as they continue to (for the most part) over perform at the box office.

This is the 87th spec script sale of 2013 overall, and Screen Gems' second. Click the title above for more details.

October 3, 2013 2013 Spec Script Sale #86: The Ambassadors, by Tripper Clancy

Ensemble comedy "The Ambassadors" from Tripper Clancy has been optioned by 20th Century Fox. French director Danny Boon is set to helm the project being produced by Nicky Weinstock ("Bridesmaids").

Tripper's repped by Emerson Davis and Jon Hudde at UTA, and Jake Wagner at Benderspink.

This is the 86th spec script sale of 2013 overall. As always, feel free to click the title above for more details.

October 3, 2013 2013 Spec Script Sale #85: Matthew 21, by Kurt Wimmer

In September, Basil Iwanyk and his Thunder Road Pictures went on an original material shopping spree. They purchased a (you guessed it) sci-fi spec by Kurt Wimmer titled "Matthew 21," which he'll also direct. QED International is on board to co-finance.

While details are being kept close to the chest, we're told it revolves around the journey of the machine to become human. Right on.

This is Thunder Road's 4th spec purchase, and the 85th spec script sale of 2013 overall. Feel free to click the title above for more details.

October 3, 2013 2013 Spec Script Sale #84: Time Square, by Dan Mazeau

The second chapter in our favorite book, The Pitch that was a Spec: "Time Square," by Dan Mazeau ("Wrath of the Titans"). It's a sci-fi spec purchased by 20th Century Fox for Shawn Levy and his 21 Laps to produce with Jordan Kerner and his eponymous production company.

The CAA and Circle of Confusion repped scribe is busy on various studio OWAs, but this appears to be his first spec sale.

This is the 84th spec script sale of 2013 overall. Feel free to click the title above for more details.

October 3, 2013 2013 Spec Script Sale #83: Untitled Amy Schumer Comedy, by Amy Schumer

We're not making excuses, but, this happens quite a bit (and maybe again just above…): a pitch was actually a spec sale. Such is the case when, in late August, UTA and Mosaic repped funny woman Amy Schumer set up her Untitled Comedy at Universal with Judd Apatow and his Apatow Productions to produce.

Seems like a perfect marriage. This won't be Judd's first go attempting to turn an inherently hilarious actress/scribe into a blockbuster success. He'll be overseeing Amy's next pass at the script.

This is the 83rd spec script sale of 2013 overall. Feel free to click the title above for more details.

October 3, 2013 2013 Spec Script Sale #82: Panopticon, by Craig Rosenberg

Here's a unique sale we forgot to clue you in on. Craig Rosenberg's sci-fi thriller spec "Panopticon," had been set up at Lionsgate in 2009, then GK Films, and now has found a home at Good Universe. Heavyweight Andrew Lazar will produce through his MadChance banner, and Tarsem Singh ("Immortals") is set to direct. It's always tough to see your project go through development hell, but a pat on the back to Rosenberg's reps at UTA for persisting a six year dog fight (Panopticon originally went out in 2007) to get this to the big screen. Hopefully the karma loop closes and this gets fast tracked into production.

This is the 82nd spec script sale of 2013 overall. As always, feel free to click the title above for more details.

We've got a few more outlier specs that we didn't blog and (rudely) kept from you. Stay tuned.

September 16, 2013 2013 Spec Script Sale #81: No Good Deed, by Brandon Boyce

"No Good Deed," a spec script by "Apt Pupil" scribe Brandon Boyce is Dean Devlin and Electric Entertainment's second purchase of the day. This one's a thriller about a pair of young valets turned burglars who get themselves into quite the jam. And this time, Electric's Marc Roskin is set to direct, with himself, Devlin and Rachel Olschan producing.

Boyce is with ICM Partners' Doug MacLaren and Alex Lerner at Kaplan/Perrone.

This is 82nd spec script sale of 2013 overall. As always, feel free to click the title above for more details.

September 16, 2013 2013 Spec Script Sale #80: Critical Hour, by Eric Tipton

Dean Devlin ("Independence Day," "The Patriot") has purchased "Critical Hour" to direct and produce through his Electric Entertainment banner. The script, by Eric Tipton, follows a wounded hitman turned whistleblower on the lam, accompanied by two paramedics, with a cartel on their heels. Devlin's currently directing "Geostorm."

Electric partners Rachel Olschan and Marc Roskin are also producing.

Tipton is with Resolution and Haven Entertainment.

This is 81st spec script sale of 2013 overall. Feel free to click the title above for more details.

September 13, 2013 2013 Spec Script Sale #79: Hyperbaric, by Dominic Morgan & Matt Harvey

Voltage Pictures' Nic Chartier and Craig Flores have selected "Hyperbaric" as their next project. It's a contained thriller in the vein of "Training Day" and "Das Boot" by writing team Dominic Morgan & Matt Harvey. The duo, repped by APA's David Saunders and manager Brooklyn Weaver, had "Into Hell" in development at Bold Films with Eric Bana circling at one point.

This is the Saunders' 2nd, Weaver's 12th, and the 79th spec script sale of 2013 overall. You can click the title above for more details.

September 5, 2013 2013 Spec Script Sale #78: Sicario, by Taylor Sheridan

Basil Iwanyk has dipped into the discretionary funds of his Thunder Road Pictures to snag Taylor Sheridan's spec script "Sicario." Details on the project are pretty hush, but we're sure Basil and his VP of Development, Erica Lee, also producing, will look to partner up on it.

Sheridan's with the Hohman, Liev and Maybank at Gersh as well as Elevate's Jenny Wood and Alex Cole.

Thunder Road's purchase marks the 78th spec script sale of 2013 overall. Click the title above for more details.

September 5, 2013 2013 Spec Script Sale #77: Into The Fire, by Matt Savelloni

And just like that, summer's over. International sales agent The Exchange ("The Spectacular Now," "Magic Mike") has purchased Matt Savelloni's thriller "Into The Fire" for Tariq Jalil and Lucas Carter to produce through Intrigue. Who can blame them for becoming more hands-on, with a track record like that? We're told it's in the vein of Schumacher's Bill Foster tale "Falling Down," which is enough to sign us up.

This is the 77th spec script sale of 2013 overall. You can click the title above for more details.

September 4, 2013 2013 Spec Script Sale #76: Come As You Are, by Erik Linthorst

You writers out there are probably familiar with this piece of advice, but we'll give it anyway: take notes. Specifically, take note of Erik Linthorst ("High School"), an unrepped writer who sold his spec, "Come As You Are," to Ted Field ("Spring Breakers") and his Radar Pictures. You may be familiar with the source material - a 2011 Belgian film of the same name, also titled Hasta La Vista! - which Linthorst chose to adapt on spec.

Seriously, a Spec Scout congrats to Erik. Here's to fortune continuing to favor the bold.

This is the 76th spec script sale of 2013 overall. You can click the title above for more details.

August 27, 2013 2013 Spec Script Sale #75: Split, by Adam Gierasch & Jace Anderson

It's been a quiet ten days for the spec market. Thank you CBS Films for breaking the silence. They've purchased Adam Giersach & Jace Anderson's "Split," a female two-handed thriller with supernatural elements. CBS Films isn't known for dipping too deep into the spec market well, but they've tied 2011, their biggest year (and have already surpassed 2012's number, zero).

The pair recently wrote Schism, a thriller staring Callum Blue which Gierasch is directing. They're with Gersh's Lee Keele and Mike De Trana.

This is the 75th spec script sale of 2013 overall. Click the title above for more details.

August 15, 2013 2013 Spec Script Sale #74: Other People's Love Letters, by Bethany Ashton Wolf

CBS Films will try to turn a collection of risqué, unadulterated love letters into its next movie. They've purchased "Other People's Love Letters," a spec script by Bethany Ashton Wolf, based on the book of the same name, for Tom Bezucha ("The Family Stone") to direct. Laurence Mark will produce with Jonathan Shukat. Wolf's with APA's Debbie Deuble and Sheryl Peterson, as well as Magnet's Zach Tann.

Bezucha's known for churning out heart-wrenchers, and CBS Films executives Mark Ross and Winnie Kemp are crossing their fingers that "Love Letters" is his next.

This is the 74th spec script sale of 2013 overall. We invite you to click the title above for more details.

August 15, 2013 2013 Spec Script Sale #73: Soldiers of the Sun, by Arash Amel

Hot scribe Arash Amel ("Grace of Monaco") has sold his third spec, "Soldiers of the Sun," to Universal Pictures for Lorenzo di Bonaventura to produce along side Vin Diesel and producing partner Samantha Vincent. This is Universal's first sci-fi spec purchase of the year, which continues to be the hot genre around town. David Lancaster has purchased "Children of the Gun" by Will Dunn to produce through his Bold Films.  The spec went for low against mid six figures, earning a future unlike the desolate one the script depicts.  This keeps WME's Mike Esola in the lead with six specs sold this year, and it is the 68th spec script sale of 2013 overall.

This one's being reported a bit late, but we didn't want the WME lit department thinking we were shaving the numbers.

July 24, 2013 2013 Spec Script Sale #64: The Driver, by George Richards

Heist thriller "The Driver," by George Richards, is the first spec script acquisition we've tracked for Forest Whitaker's JuntoBox Films. The year-old indie financier/production company just wrapped its first feature, "Sacrifice," starring Dermot Mulroney and Melora Walters. Richards is with Magnet's Jennie Frankel Frisbie. Deadline announced the project in June, but it slipped past us because it wasn't clear it was a spec (we're assured it was).

We're calling this is the 64th spec script sale of 2013 overall.  Click the title above to see the project's details.

July 24, 2013 2013 Spec Script Sale #63: The Lost, by TJ Fixman

New Line has started flexing some muscle a bit in the wake of Jeff Robinov's departure from Warner Bros. last month. The studio bought its first spec script of the year for Shawn Levy's 21 Laps to produce. It's an action comedy (naturally) called "The Lost" and it's by TJ Fixman ("Ratchet & Clank"), whose 2011 Hit List screenplay "One Night On The Hudson" got a big boost a couple of months ago when Universal bought it for Charlie Day and Jason Sudeikis to star for director Seth Gordon ("Identity Thief"). Fixman recently announced on his blog that he was quitting his day job as a videogame writer at Insomniac Games to focus on screenwriting (probably a safe move).

This is the 63rd spec spec sale of 2013 overall. Click the title, above, to see the project's details.

July 24, 2013 2013 Spec Script Sale #62: Maggie's Dawn, by Blaine Tyler

This one stayed on the DL until BCDF Pictures went on a 4-script buying spree last month and someone tipped us off about a 5th. Back in March(-ish), the indie financier/production company bought the 2011 Nicholl semi-finalist sci-fi spec, "Maggie's Dawn," by Blaine Tyler.

Tyler was unrepped at the time of sale and as of a few weeks ago when we first heard about this sale, but we're guessing he won't be for long.

Even though it happened in March, as far as we're concerned this is the 62nd spec script sale of 2013 overall. Click the title, above, to see the project's details.

July 24, 2013 2013 Spec Script Sale #61: Catfight, by Amelie Gillette

Mea culpa: This one slipped by us mid-month last month, but made it on to the last two spec script-related Scoggins Reports and we're catching up with it here, too.

Sony's Screen Gems label snagged Amelie Gillette's spec teen comedy, "Catfight" for the buyer's favorite in-house shop, Olive Bridge Entertainment and its head chef Will Gluck.  Comedic writer/producer team Brian Gatewood & Alex Tanaka will executive produce.

We're calling this the 61st spec script sale of 2013 overall; it's the first pick up of the year for the studio, which typically develops from within. Click the title, above, to see the project's details.

This is the 60th spec script sale of 2013 overall and #11 for Weaver, two more than his 2012 total. Click the title, above, to see the project's details.

June 28, 2013 2013 Spec Script Sale #59: No Quarter, by Alessandro Camon & Michael Wilson

Basil Iwanyk's Thunder Road has purchased its second spec script so far this year. It's a "contemporary crime story" according to Deadline (we're tagging it as a Thriller) by Alessandro Camon and Michael Wilson titled "No Quarter." Michael De Luca will produce with Iwanyk. Camon wrote 2009's "The Messenger" with director Oren Moverman.

This is the 59th spec script sale of 2013 overall. Cick the title, above, to see the project's details.

June 26, 2013 2013 Spec Script Sale #58: Tranquility Base, by Daniel Turkewitz

Brooklyn Weaver just became the first manager to break into double digit spec sales in 2013.

Fox preemptively picked up first-timer Daniel Turkewitz's sci-fi thriller, "Tranquility Base," for Scott Free to produce. This is the studio's second spec purchase of the year (both were sci-fi scripts), the 10th for Energy and the 58th of 2013 overall. Cick the title, above, to see the project's details.

June 20, 2013 2013 Spec Script Sale #57: Criminal, by Douglas Cook & David Weisberg

The past three weeks have been the hottest in the spec market all year -- 13 spec script sales have been announced since May 30, and we hear there'll be another before the weekend.

The fourth screenplay sale this week -- and the second to be announced today -- went to Millennium Films: Doug Cook & David Weisberg's action thriller, "Criminal." This is the first spec of the year for Millennium (they bought 7 in 2012), the 2nd for Resolution, 6th for Benderspink, and the 57th of 2013 overall. Cick the title, above, to see the project's details.

June 19, 2013 2013 Spec Script Sale #55: Hostile Engagement, by Josh Campbell & Matt Stuecken

This would have been 2013 Spec Script #53, but we totally dropped the ball on posting this when we heard it late last Friday: The Solution picked up Josh Campbell & Matt Stuecken's action comedy spec "Hostile Engagement" for Energy Entertainment's Brooklyn Weaver and Madhouse Entertainment's Adam Kolbrenner to produce. UTA and the two management companies took the script to market in April.

We're calling this the 55th spec script sale of 2013 overall. Cick the title, above, to see the project's details.

June 19, 2013 2013 Spec Script Sale #54: Cops And Robots, by Matteson Perry

Believe it or not, the company that's bought the most spec scripts so far this year hadn't bought a single spec previously. As in, ever. It's BCDF Pictures, financier of "Higher Ground" and "Liberal Arts," which just picked up its fourth spec of 2013 (its fourth in June 2013, for that matter): Matteson Perry's action comedy, "Cops and Robots."

This is the 54th spec script sale of 2013 overall. Cick the title, above, to see the project's details.

June 18, 2013 2013 Spec Script Sale #53: Revelation (fka Lord of Light), by Hernany Perla

We've been waiting several weeks to be able to post this one.

Lotus Entertainment announced late yesterday that it bought Hernany Perla's supernatural thriller spec, "Revelation," for Circle of Confusion to produce. The project originally went to market in April under the title "Lord of Light" and got set up relatively quickly, but we heard Lotus was waiting to announce the sale until after Cannes.

This is the 53rd spec script sale of 2013. Cick the title, above, to see the project's details.

      June 13, 2013 2013 Spec Script Sale #52: 12/24, by Matt Lieberman

Just in time for Chri...er, the 4th of July, Ocean Blue Entertainment has bought Matt Lieberman's holiday action comedy spec, "12/24," for Chris Columbus to produce through his 1492 Pictures. The project originally went to market in December last year with "Safe House" scribe David Guggenheim aboard to produce with Madhouse's Adam Kolbrenner.

This is the first spec purchase we've tracked for Ocean Blue, and the 52nd spec script sale of 2013 overall. Cick the title, above, to see the project's details.

June 7, 2013 2013 Spec Script Sale #49: Don't Mess With Texas, by John Quaintance & David Feeney

2013 spec script sale #49 was quite a little package: Universal bought its 3rd spec of the year, the action comedy "Don't Mess With Texas," by John Quaintance & David Feeney, for Reese Witherspoon to produce with Bruno Papandrea under their Pacific Standard banner with Dana Fox. Witherspoon will star with Sofia Vergara.

Deadline reported the sale this afternoon, noting the studio is pushing for a March 2014 start date. Click the title, above, for additional project details.

June 5, 2013 2013 Spec Script Sale #48: Young Agatha, by Jamie Dawson

One more Agatha Christie project and we'll have a trend!

Hudson Valley, New York-based production company BCDF Pictures ("Liberal Arts," "Bachelorette") has picked up period drama spec script "Young Agatha," by Jamie Dawson. This is the first spec purchase we've tracked for BCDF, and the 48th spec sale overall so far in 2013. Click the title, above, for the details.

In March, Paramount bought Allison Schroeder's same-but-different spec "Agatha," a semi-fictitious tale focusing on a later portion of Christie's life, for Will Gluck to direct and Mary Parent to produce.

May 31, 2013 2013 Spec Script Sale #47: Visions, by Lucas Sussman

Three spec sales announced in 24 hours is as good a way to end the week as we can think of. (Okay, fine, we can think of a couple of other excellent ways, but still…)

Variety reported this morning that Jason Blum's Blumhouse Productions has snapped up horror thriller spec "Visions," by Lucas Sussman. "Saw 3D" helmer Kevin Greutert is attached to direct, and production is already being scheduled to start this Fall.

This is the first spec purchase we've tracked for Blumhouse, the 9th spec script sale in May, and the 47th overall in 2013. You can click the title, above, to see the project's details.

May 31, 2013 2013 Spec Script Sale #46: Jump, by John Scott Shepherd

You know things are weird in the spec market when the biggest buyers are Lionsgate and Relativity. Because that's where things stand as of now: Deadline reported this morning that Relativity has picked up romantic dramedy spec "Jump," by John Scott Shepherd.

This is Relativity's third spec purchase of the year, which ties first-place Lionsgate, and marks the 46th spec script sale overall in 2013. You can click the title, above, to see project details.

Deadline reported this afternoon that Warner Bros. has picked up action spec script, "The Asterisk," by rising star scribes Jordan Goldberg & Alex Paraskevas, whose script "The Gun Eaters" made the 2011 Black List and Hit List and sold to Paramount a few months later in 2012.

This is the 45th spec script sale of 2013, and just the second spec purchase for Warner Bros. so far this year, after being one of the top studio buyers for each of the past four years. Click on the title, above, to see the project's details.

May 17, 2013 2013 Spec Script Sale #44: Little Evil, by Eli Craig

Yesterday, Universal Pictures became just the third studio to buy more than one spec script so far in 2013 by picking up the dark comedy spec, "Little Evil," by writer/director Eli Craig (Tucker & Dale vs. Evil), who is attached to direct this as well. Scott Stuber will produce through his Bluegrass Films. The price tag was in the low seven figures, according to THR's Heat Vision blog.

This is the 44th spec script sale of 2013, and the second for Universal, which bought 9 in 2012. Click on the title, above, to see additional project's details.

May 15, 2013 2013 Spec Script Sale #43: Dark Summer, by Mike Le

At first glance, Variety's announcement last week that Mike Le's supernatural thriller, "Dark Summer," had attached a director slipped passed us, since it didn't seem to involve a spec sale. It did, though, and a cool one, since the project is being fast tracked to production later this year.

This marks the 43rd spec script sale of 2013.

May 13, 2013 2013 Spec Script Sale #42: The Man On Carrion Road, by Nils Lyew

Devoted Deadline readers will have seen the announcement of the Atlas Independent / Relativity International / Timothy Olyphant project, "The Man on Carrion Road," last Friday afternoon, but what that story didn't mention is that the thriller was written on spec by talented newcomer Nils Lyew.

Atlas had the inside track on the project and picked it up preemptively last Fall in conjunction with Relativity. The production team has been hard at work packaging it up, and Friday's announcement says they'll be going into production in August in Medellin, Colombia with Gonzalo Lopez-Gallego at the helm.

This is the 42nd spec script sale of 2013.

      May 13, 2013 2013 Spec Script Sale #41: I.T., by Daniel Kay

This one's not quite as timely, but we can't let a spec sale go uncounted. As Deadline reported at the beginning of February, Voltage picked up Daniel Kay's revenge thriller, "I.T.," which originally went to market in February 2012 with David Friendly attached to produce.

If I'd caught this one when it was announced, it would have been 2013 spec script sale #8. Better late than never, I suppose; as it stands, it's #41.

May 13, 2013 2013 Spec Script Sale #40: Party Girl, by Vik Weet

Barcelona-based production company Nostromo Pictures joins the growing ranks of 2013's non-studio spec script buyers. Adrian Guerra's production company has picked up supernatural horror spec "Party Girl," by Vikram Weet. Guerra will produce.

May 3, 2013 2013 Spec Script Sale #39: Cornered, by Richard Bobbie & Andy Fraser

Let's hear it for the non-studio buyers, who are picking up the slack for the studios in the spec market. Here's the second one we've posted today: 1821 Pictures ("Jane Got A Gun") has picked up "Cornered," a thriller spec by Richard Bobbie & Andy Fraser, which WME and Manus Entertainment took out in 2012. This is the 39th spec script sale of 2013, and the first we've tracked for 1821. Click the title, above, to see the project's details.

May 3, 2013 2013 Spec Script Sale #38: A Beautiful Day In The Neighborhood, by Alexis Jolly

The big question with this one is undoubtedly going to be...who plays Mr. Rogers? Deadline reported yesterday that Treehouse Pictures ("Arbitrage") has picked up the drama spec "A Beautiful Day In The Neighborhood," a biopic by Alexis Jolly based on the life of beloved children's TV icon Fred "Mr." Rogers.

This is the 38th spec script sale of 2013, and the first we've tracked for 1821, which bought an untitled Jake Sheier/Chris Ford pitch in March. Click the title, above, for the details.

April 29, 2013 2013 Spec Script Sale #37: Capsule, by Ian Shorr

If you liked Ian Shorr’s “Cristo,” which made the 2011 Black List and Hit List, you’ll dig this one. Deadline reported this afternoon that Fox has picked up Shorr’s latest sci-fi spec, “Capsule,” for Hutch Parker to produce through his eponymous production company along with John Zaozirny. This is Fox’s first spec of the year, believe it or not, and marks the 15th spec script sale this month, not to mention the 37th of 2013.

April 29, 2013 2013 Spec Script Sale #36: Equinox, by Adam Mason & Simon Boyes

This one’s a bit of a correction: Back in mid-February, THR reported that Paramount Insurge had picked up “Equinox,” a sci-fi pitch by Adam Mason & Simon Boyes. Turns out it wasn’t a pitch, it was a spec.

It would have been 2013 spec script sale #10 if I’d known at the time, and I’ll update the next Spec Market Scorecard to show the sale happening in February, but for the purposes of the blog I’m commemorating it today as the 36th spec sale of the year.

April 25, 2013 2013 Spec Script Sale #35: Home Invasion, by Joseph Dembner

Voltage has picked up its 2nd spec of 2013, the 35th spec script sale so far this year. As reported on Deadline this afternoon, it’s “Home Invasion,” a thriller by Joseph Dembner, and it’s got quite the backstory. Details are on SpecScout.com, naturally - click the title, above.

April 24, 2013 2013 Spec Script Sale #34: You'll Be The Death Of Me, by Mark Hammer

Lionsgate continues to set a shining example for the major studios: The company has just picked up its third spec of the year – Mark Hammer’s horror comedy spec “You’ll Be The Death of Me,” for Mandeville to produce. This marks the 34th spec script sale of 2013.

The writer’s previous spec, “Two Night Stand,” made the 2011 Black List and Hit List, received a very high Spec Scout Score (82.7), got set up at Demarest Films in September last year and is already in post-production.

Details on this project are, of course, on SpecScout.com.

As Variety reported on Friday, Matt Moore’s new production company, Mammo Media, has launched by picking up an action thriller spec: “Black Friday,” by John Sullivan. This is the 32nd spec script sale of 2013, and the third announced so far by Sullivan’s management company, Benderspink. (I’m hearing another handful of announcements are in the offing.) Congrats to all.

April 18, 2013 2013 Spec Script Sale #31: Inquest, by "Sam Cohen" (aka Josh Simon)

I’ve been so focused on testing the new version of Spec Scout this week that I neglected to post the latest spec script sale on Tuesday when Deadline reported it: New York-based Wayfare Entertainment (“Sanctum”) pre-emptively bought the political thriller spec, “Inquest,” by “Sam Cohen.” The writer’s name is in quotes because it’s the pseudonym, according to Deadline and others, of former studio and production executive-turned screenwriter Josh Simon. It’s the first spec purchase I’ve noted for Wayfare, and the 31st spec sale of the 2013.

April 11, 2013 2013 Spec Script Sale #30: Highrise, by Peter Dowling

Fox 2000 has picked up Peter Dowling's thriller spec, "Highrise," for Jon Shestack to produce through his eponymous production company.  This is the 30th spec script sale of 2013, and the first for Fox 2000 since January 2012.

The spec sales just won't stop today:  Deadline reports that Warner Bros. has purchased "The Bermuda Triangle," an action piece by Daniel Kunka.  This is the 29th spec script sale of 2013, and the first spec purchase for Warner Bros. in about six months (since October 2012). Kunka's last spec sale was "agent ox." [sic], which sold to Columbia Pictures in 2011 for Original Film to produce and made Tracking-Board.com's Hit List later that year.

The 28th spec script sale of 2013 is Justin Adler's romantic comedy, House Arrest, which Deadline reports has sold to Relativity Media. Adler has a long credit list in TV (including one of Jason's favorite shows, the late and lamented "Better Off Ted"); his last spec sale was "The Escort," which sold to Dreamworks in February 2010 and made the Black List later that year. This is Relativity's first spec purchase in over a year, since February 2012.

April 8, 2013 2013 Spec Script Sale #27: Shut In, by TJ Cimfel & David White

Another 2012 Blood List and Black List script makes good: Shut In, the horror thriller spec script by TJ Cimfel & David White, is the 27th spec script sale of 2013. Ombra Films was attached to produce when the script originally went out last year but is no longer involved. Indie financier RadioactiveGiant now plans to push this forward quickly, aiming for a Fall 2013 start in Mississippi.

April 6, 2013 2013 Spec Script Sale #26: Omega Point, by Cameron Alexander
